Origins & Vision

The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) was founded in 1924 as the Edmonton Museum of Arts, evolving through name and location changes before adopting its current name in 2005. Its mission is to champion visual arts in Alberta and beyond, offering a space where visitors of all backgrounds encounter creativity, cultural exchange, and critical dialogue. Located in downtown Edmonton, the gallery has served as a community cultural anchor for a century.

Architectural Statement

AGA occupies a striking 8,000 m² building at Churchill Square, whose redesign (2007–2010) by renowned architect Randall Stout doubled exhibition space and gave birth to its iconic steel-ribbon exterior. The flowing form symbolizes the North Saskatchewan River and aurora borealis, turning the building itself into a work of art.

Collection & Exhibitions

With a permanent collection exceeding 6,000 works, AGA emphasizes Alberta and Western Canadian artists across media—painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking. Notable artists featured include Janet Cardiff, Brian Jungen, Takao Tanabe, Robert Boyer, among others. In addition to the core collection, the gallery hosts dynamic temporary and touring exhibitions, engaging global perspectives.

Visitor Access & Programming

AGA is open Wednesday to Sunday, with Thursday late openings until 7 pm. Admission is free monthly on the last Thursday evening, with generally modest pricing and various discounts for students, seniors, and partner memberships.
